Flow is when a person is completely immersed in an
activity and using a set of skills. The
activity should be intrinsically rewarding and the person enjoys the activity
for their own fulfillment and not for rewards from others. Flow can be experienced while swimming,
running, writing, painting, playing music and more.
I am completely focused on the activity when
I am swimming laps in the pool for recreation and exercise. When I was younger, I took swimming
lessons and then I joined the Wethersfield Berracudas Swim Team with my older
sister. We enjoyed swimming laps and
learning all of the different strokes, such as freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly. During swim
practice, the time would pass quickly because I was so immersed and focused on
the activity. When I entered high school,
I joined the Lady Eagles Swimming and Diving Team and swam successfully.
I continue to swim for exercise and I feel
that I experience flow during this time.
I can relate this to my career and school work because when I am writing
I also often find flow. I have always
been motivated to complete my homework, assignments, and projects on time and
plan to continue that pattern while in college and in my career.
